The Vintage Yellow Bronze Virgin Mary with Lilies Ornament shows a veiled woman in strict profile, her head ringed by a halo of concentric arcs and her hands folded low before her, with tall lily stems rising on either side of the field.
The lily is the flower of purity and the oldest of the Virgin's emblems, carried by Gabriel at the Annunciation and grown around her image ever since. The drawing here is pure Art Nouveau: the long unbroken line of the veil down her back, the flattened profile, the halo reduced to a set of ruled arcs. The relief is shallow and beautifully controlled, which is what lets so much detail survive at this size, and the yellow bronze gives the whole panel a warm, even light.
