The Vintage Yellow Bronze Saint Anne of Auray Garden Medal shows Saint Anne crowned and robed, standing on a low pedestal with the young Virgin at her right hand. The ground beneath them is strewn with tiny raised fleurons, and open flowers and a curving stem crowd the frame, which is what gives the medal its garden.
Saint Anne is the mother of Mary and grandmother of Christ, and she is shown here as she is most loved, teaching her daughter to read the scriptures. The reverse carries two lines of engraved cursive, de Sainte Anne d'Auray, of Saint Anne of Auray, naming the great Breton shrine at Sainte-Anne-d'Auray where pilgrims have come since the seventeenth century. She is asked for by mothers and grandmothers, by women hoping for a child, and by anyone praying that a family be held together.
