The Vintage Yellow Bronze Sacred Heart Cross has real character in its outline, the four arms flaring outward and finishing in crescent split terminals so the silhouette reads almost like a star. A round medallion sits at the centre of each face, and one holds a half-length figure of Christ showing his Sacred Heart, the rays behind him filling the disc.
The other medallion carries the IHS monogram surmounted by a small cross and set over three nails, ringed by the words APOSTOLAT DU COEUR DE JESUS, Apostleship of the Heart of Jesus. That name belongs to the French devotional societies of the Sacred Heart, whose members offered each day's work and prayer in union with the Heart of Christ. It makes this a membership piece as much as a devotional one: something worn because a person had joined something, not only because they believed something.
