The Vintage Yellow Bronze Sacred Heart and Help of Christians Medal is a large shaped piece with flowering sprays at the corners and a bank of cloud at the foot. One face shows Christ half-length, crowned with thorns and haloed, one hand raised and the flaming heart on his breast, with COR JESUS lettered in a curve above him. The other shows Mary crowned, holding the crowned Christ Child, beneath the words AUXILIUM CHRISTIANORUM.
The titles are Heart of Jesus and Help of Christians. The second is an ancient invocation from the Litany of Loreto, long carried by Marian confraternities and taken up with particular warmth in the Salesian tradition, where Mary is asked for help in the plain and practical sense of the word. The spelling COR JESUS is the one cast into the antique original; strict Latin would read Cor Iesu, and that small variation is part of what places the piece in its own time and workshop.
