Vintage Yellow Bronze Ornate Crucifix with Stars
Product Details
This ornate yellow bronze crucifix is worked over its entire surface. The arms end in lobed trefoils, every face is covered with fine cross-hatching, and small raised stars are set into the lobes and along the shaft, so the piece glitters a little as it turns. A beaded titulus above the head is lettered INRI, and the corpus is drawn long with the head fallen to the right.
INRI stands for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross. Crucifixes decorated as densely as this one belonged to the family devotions of nineteenth-century Europe, cut deep enough to be read across a room, and the stars scattered through the ornament turn the wood of the cross into something closer to a night sky.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
