Vintage Yellow Bronze Lourdes Medal, Our Lady with Roses

The Lourdes Medal is a quatrefoil opened at its center, where the Virgin stands clear of any ground, veiled and with her hands joined at her breast. Roses climb from a small disc at the base of the frame, and the reverse of the same piece shows the back of the standing figure with an ornamented monogram worked into that disc.
The disc is dated 11 FEV. 1858, the eleventh of February 1858, the day Bernadette Soubirous, out gathering firewood at the grotto of Massabielle, first saw the Lady there. The date records the apparition rather than the piece. The roses belong to the same account, since Bernadette described a rose lying on each bare foot. Everything the devotion needs is here, which is why the French medal makers of the following decades returned to this composition again and again.
The Lourdes medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
