The Vintage Yellow Bronze Lace and Filigree Crucifix is worked into something close to lace. The arms are pierced through and filled with curling foliate scrolls, each ending in a scalloped, leaf-shaped terminal, and a bed of leaves gathers at the foot. The corpus is finely modelled and left plain against all that openwork, beneath a small raised titulus.
Filigree of this kind was the specialty of the small devotional workshops of the nineteenth century, where the fineness of the piercing was the whole point of the piece and a crucifix was expected to look as much grown as made. The leafwork carries the old reading of the cross as the tree of life, the wood of Calvary breaking into leaf. Small and light in the hand, it suits a child's rosary or a piece meant to be worn every day.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
