Vintage Yellow Bronze French Miraculous Medal, Large Oval

This large oval Miraculous Medal shows the Virgin standing with her hands open and rays falling from them, the serpent crushed beneath her feet, with the French invocation set in blocks of lettering around her: O Marie conçue sans péché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous, O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. The other face carries the letter M surmounted by a cross, twelve stars, and two hearts below, one crowned with thorns and one pierced by a sword.
The design was given to Catherine Labouré in the chapel on the Rue du Bac in Paris in 1830, shown to her as a frame of words around a figure whose hands poured light. The rays, Our Lady told her, are the graces she gives to those who ask for them, and the stones that stayed dark were the graces no one thought to ask for. Struck first in 1832, it earned its name from what followed.
