The Vintage Yellow Bronze Framed Four-Way Cross Medal sets a four-armed cross inside an oval frame of beaded blocks, with the metal cut away in the quarters so the cross seems suspended in its ring. At the crossing a dove descends in a burst of rays, the Holy Spirit at the very heart of the piece.
The upper arm carries the Sacred Heart, a haloed half-figure with the flaming heart at the breast, and the lower arm carries Our Lady standing in her own small field. Four-way medals were made for people who wanted several devotions at once and only one thing to wear: the Spirit at the center, the Heart of Christ above, the Mother of God below. They were carried daily and often for a lifetime, which is why so few survive unworn. The deep relief here lets the antiquing gather in the beading and bring each small scene forward.
