Two fluted columns carry a leafy arch, and beneath it a bearded man in a long robe stands holding a tall staff that breaks into blossom at the top, his free hand steadying a small child at his side. Foliage and one broad flower fill the ground below, and the whole panel is pierced through so that light passes between the columns.
The flowering staff is St. Joseph's own attribute, from the old account of the choosing of Mary's husband, when his rod alone burst into bloom. Here he stands as he spent his life, with the Child beside him and a hand on him.
