The Vintage White Bronze St. Francis Medal with the Blessing shows Francis among the birds. He stands haloed in a plain Franciscan habit, one bird settling at his raised hand, a row of them along the ground at his feet and more gathered at his right.
The reverse is given entirely to words, nine lines of raised Italian carrying the blessing Francis wrote out for Brother Leo. Il Signore ti benedica e ti custodisca begins it: may the Lord bless you and keep you; may he show you his face and have mercy on you; may he turn his gaze toward you and give you peace. It is the ancient priestly blessing of the book of Numbers, put into the hand of a friend who was struggling, and it has been carried on medals ever since as a blessing one person can pass to another.
