The Vintage White Bronze Russian Etched Cross carries its beauty on the surface. Every arm is filled with fine dotted and hatched lines in imitation of hand engraving, an inner cross is drawn inside the outer one, and a slender flowering plant climbs the lower shaft with two star-shaped blossoms open at its head. The budded, trefoil ends are the old Orthodox form, three buds for the Trinity at the tip of each arm.
Across the arms stand the letters IC and XC, the Greek abbreviation for Jesus Christ, the first and last letter of each name. It is the shorthand used on Orthodox icons and crosses for many centuries, and here it names the one who hangs unseen: the cross carries no figure, only his name and the flowering stem that says what the dead wood became. The antique original is Russian, of the eighteenth century.
