An Art Nouveau rosary center built around a small round medallion of the Virgin. She is shown in profile, veiled, her head bowed, within a plain raised rim. From behind the medallion the frame sweeps out on both sides into long stylized petals and whipping stems, and a lily opens above her, so the flowers seem to grow around the Virgin rather than merely enclose her.
The lily is Mary's oldest emblem, the flower of her purity and the flower Gabriel carries in a thousand Annunciations, and a designer working in France around 1900 would have reached for it without hesitating. The asymmetry, the long tapering lines and the way solid metal turns into open space are the marks of the Art Nouveau workshops, which brought to devotional work the same freedom they brought to everything else. The piece carries no lettering at all, and the modeling is soft and confident throughout, closer to small sculpture than to anything stamped out.
