The Large Filigree Center is the widest of the filigree pieces, worked in scrolls, beaded loops and small flowers pierced right through the metal from edge to edge. At the middle a raised oval boss holds the veiled head of the Virgin in profile, her eyes lowered, modelled softly enough that the face reads as much by shadow as by line.
The Madonna in profile, treated almost as a cameo, was a favourite of nineteenth-century devotional jewellers, and the lowered eyes are the point of it. This is Mary recollected, keeping all these things and pondering them in her heart, which is the disposition the rosary is meant to teach. A center of this size was made for a substantial rosary, and it sits like a small brooch at the place where the decades meet, so the hand finds it at the end of every round.
The filigree rosary center was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the piece's vintage character.
