The modelling is deep and the openwork lets light through the halo and the folds.
Joan was seventeen when she led an army and nineteen when she died, and this is the moment the Art Nouveau sculptors preferred to give her: not the victory but the prayer before it, the girl who heard voices and answered them. She was canonised in 1920 and is patroness of France and of soldiers, and her feast falls on the thirtieth of May.
