The Vintage Sterling Silver Our Lady of Sorrows Medal shows the Mater Dolorosa veiled and looking upward, her hands clasped at her breast, with a fan of sword blades converging on her heart. The reverse holds the Crucifixion: a haloed woman standing at the left of the cross, a haloed disciple at the right, and a figure kneeling at its foot. The modelling is close and tender for a piece barely more than half an inch across.
The swords come from Simeon, who told Mary in the temple that a sword would pierce her own soul, and devotion has counted seven such sorrows across her life. She is honoured under this title by anyone carrying a grief of their own, because the Mother of Sorrows is understood to have gone the whole way through it first. In sterling the fine relief of the face reads especially clearly.
