A lamb lies at his feet and a small gourd rests on the ground beside him. Arching across the top of the field, in clear raised letters, are the words VIVA JESUS, long live Jesus.
That acclamation has been spoken, sung and carried through Spanish devotional life for centuries, on the lips of confraternities and at the head of processions. The staff with its banner is the standard of the Resurrection, and the lamb beside it is the Lamb of God, two of the oldest emblems in Christian art, set together here so that the sacrifice and the victory are read at once.
