Two bearded apostles sit facing one another, haloed, one with a book open on his knee, and between and above them a radiant winged form breaks in with its rays spilling over their heads. The relief is deep and the faces strongly cut, so even at an inch across the astonishment on them carries.
Around the rim runs the Latin VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS, come, Creator Spirit, the opening of the ninth-century hymn sung at Pentecost, at ordinations and at confirmations, and still the Church's great invocation before any beginning.
