The Vintage Bronze Sunburst Virgin Medal is built as a ring of pointed rays worked all the way around an open oval, with the Virgin standing at the middle of it, robed and veiled, hands together and a scrolled crown above her head. The metal is smooth and the outline soft, the way a piece goes soft when it has been worn against the body for years.
The Virgin standing within a mandorla of light is among the oldest of all Marian images, the woman clothed with the sun of the Apocalypse. Sunburst medals on this pattern travelled through Latin America in great numbers and were made over locally wherever they landed, each place giving her its own face. The antique original for this piece came from the San Blas Islands of Panama, where it was bought from the woman who had long worn it.
The sunburst medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
