The Vintage Bronze St. Raphael and St. John of God Medal carries a named saint on each face. The front shows Raphael as a haloed angel in a long robe, wings folded behind him and a tall pilgrim's staff in his hand, the traveller's guide of the Book of Tobit, lettered S. RAFAEL ARCANGEL. He has been honoured as the custodian of Cordoba since the sixteenth century.
The reverse reads SAN JUAN DE DIOS, Saint John of God, and shows him bearded and hooded with a child seated on his arm, the encounter recounted in his life in which the child he carried across a stream was revealed as the Christ Child. He founded at Granada the hospital order that still bears his name, and is a patron of the sick, of hospitals and of nurses. Raphael, whose name means God heals, is the natural companion for him, so the two faces make one medal about healing asked for and healing given.
