St. Michael the Archangel is shown here in the pose the Church has given him for centuries: winged, in a short military tunic and cuirass, sword raised behind his shoulder and shield on his arm, standing squarely on the scaly dragon that writhes beneath his feet. The ground between the wings and the dragon is cut clean through, so the figure reads in silhouette as well as in relief.
The sword and the trampled dragon come from the Apocalypse, where Michael and his angels cast down the dragon and no place is found for him in heaven. He is invoked as protector of the Church and as patron of soldiers, police officers, paramedics and everyone whose work puts them in harm's way, which is why his medal so often marks an ordination, an enlistment or a swearing-in. Wearing it is a short prayer repeated all day long: defend us in battle.
