The landscape is worked right to the rim, so that the figure is genuinely alone in it, and a slender flowering branch curves up one side of the reverse.
Lettering runs down the right-hand edge of the face, where the name MADELEINE can be read, the French form of Magdalene, marking this as a French medal of the saint who kept her long vigil in the wilderness of Provence. She is the patron of penitents, of converts and of anyone who has had to begin again, the first witness of the Resurrection and the one the early Church called the apostle to the apostles.
