A young girl stands haloed on the front of this medal, a palm branch in one hand and a spray of lilies in the other, her name lettered small beside her. The other face carries an ornate flowered cross with rays breaking behind it, S. MARIA GORETTI arched above and PRAY FOR US across the field.
Maria Goretti was eleven years old, the daughter of a poor farming family in the Pontine marshes, when she was attacked and stabbed in 1902 and died the next day. She forgave her killer before she died and asked that he be with her in heaven, and years later, after a change of heart in prison that he laid at her door, he was present at her mother's side. She was canonised in 1950 and is honored as patron of young people, of purity and of forgiveness. The palm is for her martyrdom and the lilies for what she gave her life to keep.
