The St. Hubert medal is cast as a coiled hunting horn, its bell flared to one side and the mouthpiece and cord showing at the other, with a stag's head rising through the middle of the coil and its antlers spreading across the top. The modeling of the head is remarkable at this size: the muzzle, the set of the ears and every branching tine come through clearly.
The horn and the stag together are the emblem of St. Hubert, the Ardennes nobleman who met a stag in the forest on Good Friday, left off hunting after what he saw between its antlers, and ended his life a bishop. He is invoked by hunters, foresters and everyone who works with dogs. There is no lettering on the piece, and none is needed; the two attributes have carried his name across Europe for a thousand years.
