This French medal carries two very different saints. One face is a hunting scene: a stag stands among bare winter trees with a crucifix shining between its antlers while a huntsman kneels at the right with his dog beside him, the whole ringed by S. HUBERT PRIEZ POUR NOUS. The other shows Saint Anthony of Padua in his habit, the Child Jesus standing on a book before him and a lily rising behind, ringed by SAINT ANTOINE DE PADOUE PRIEZ POUR NOUS.
Both legends ask the same thing: pray for us. Hubert was hunting on a Good Friday morning when the stag turned and the cross appeared between its antlers, and he left the forest a different man and died a bishop, patron ever since of hunters, foresters and those who work with dogs. Anthony is the one asked for whatever has been lost. Together they make a good medal for anyone who spends time in the woods.
