Product Details

Inside the heavy cast scrollwork of this medal, a young woman with a rayed halo holds a spray of lilies, and a small tablet beneath her reads STA GEMMA. The other face, in the same frame, shows a bearded saint with a crucifix in his hand, a skull resting on an open book before him and a second cross behind his shoulder, the old emblems of penance and of meditation on death.

Gemma Galgani was a young woman of Lucca, orphaned early and often ill, who died in 1903 at twenty-five and was canonised in 1940. She wanted to enter the Passionists and never could, and lived her vocation in an ordinary house instead, in prayer and in patience with a body that would not cooperate. The lilies are for the purity her cause dwelt on, and she is turned to by students, by the sick, and by those who nurse them.

This Saint Gemma medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
