Product Details

Saint Francis de Sales is shown on the front of this medal as a bearded bishop in a rayed nimbus with a pectoral cross at his breast, named in French as Doctor of the Church. The other face shows Saint Jane Frances de Chantal veiled in the habit of a Visitation nun, her hands folded at her waist.

The two founded the Order of the Visitation together at Annecy in 1610, made for women whose health or years shut them out of the older and harsher religious houses. Francis is the great teacher of devotion for people in the middle of the world, whose Introduction to the Devout Life was written for a married woman with a household to run. Jane, widowed with four children, gave the order its shape and its steadiness. Both inscriptions close with P.P.N., priez pour nous, pray for us.

This medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
