On this pierced bronze rosary center St. Cecilia kneels at her organ, veiled and haloed, her hands joined in the middle of her own music. SANCTA runs up one edge of the disc and CECILIA down the other, Latin for Saint Cecilia, framing her like the arch of a niche. The reverse is quieter: a slender flowering lily stem laid across a softly domed field, with the numeral 15 cast into the metal.
Cecilia has been honored since the early Roman church as the martyr who sang in her heart to God alone while the instruments played at her wedding. Choirs, organists and church musicians of every kind have claimed her ever since, and her November feast is still the day choral societies sing. The lily on the reverse stands for the virginity she kept, and the piece is as often worn simply as a pendant.
