Product Details

The St. Benedict medal is held in a pierced frame of beaded scrolls, with a palmette rising above it and another closing it below, so that the round centre appears to float within the openwork. Inside, a bearded monk is shown half-length in profile, haloed, in a hooded habit, holding a staff with a crook at its head, the crozier that marks an abbot.

Benedict of Nursia left his studies in Rome around the year 500 for a cave at Subiaco, and what grew out of that solitude reshaped Europe. His Rule, written for beginners and famous for its moderation, set the pattern of monastic life in the West for fifteen centuries with its balance of prayer and work, and the abbeys that followed it kept learning, agriculture and hospitality alive through the collapse of the old world. He is the patron of Europe, and his crozier here is the sign of a father rather than a ruler.

The St. Benedict medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
