Saint Francis stands in a plain belted habit at the center of this small plaque, his head bowed toward the creatures gathered around him. Three birds are ranged down one edge above a column of swimming fish, a deer lifts its head at his right, and a single star-like flower opens above the animals. The relief is shallow and quietly modeled, in the manner of a plaque made to be carried rather than shown.
Francis called them brother and sister and meant it: the birds he preached to at Bevagna, the fish, the wolf, and the sun and moon of his Canticle. The creatures alone name him here, since no other saint would be shown in such company, and there is no lettering anywhere on the piece.
