Within the oval, a softly worn relief shows a bearded figure striding forward with his cloak thrown back and a small child carried at his shoulder.
That is Saint Christopher, the ferryman of the old legend who carried a child across a swollen river and felt the weight of the whole world settle onto his back, and who learned at the far bank whom he had been carrying.
