The Vintage Bronze Saint Anne of Auray Garden Medal shows a crowned woman in long robes standing on a low pedestal with a small child at her right hand: Saint Anne teaching the young Virgin. They stand on a ground strewn with tiny raised fleurons and framed by open flowers and a curving whiplash stem, which is where the medal gets its garden.
The reverse is left plain apart from two lines of engraved script, de Sainte Anne d'Auray, of Saint Anne of Auray. Sainte-Anne-d'Auray in Brittany has been the great French shrine of the Virgin's mother since a farmer named Yves Nicolazic was told there in 1623 to rebuild a chapel long buried in his field, and pilgrims have gone to her ever since, in their thousands each July. This is the medal they brought home.
