The Vintage Bronze Sacred Heart of Jesus Oval Center holds an oval field in a pierced frame of scrolls and small florets, wider at the shoulders than at the foot. Within it Christ appears half-length with a nimbus of fine rays behind his head, one hand raised toward the flaming heart set upon his breast, rays spreading from the heart across the chest. It is the standard image of the devotion, modelled here with unusual softness in the face.
The devotion took this familiar form after the visions granted to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 1670s, in which Christ showed his heart and asked that it be honored for its love of humanity. Centers like this one were made in large numbers through the two centuries that followed, and the gesture they record, a hand pointing to the heart, has never needed a caption.
