The Sacred Heart medallion sets Christ half-length at its center: long hair, a short beard, one hand raised, a burst of fine rays opening behind his head and the heart shown flaming on his breast. Around him runs a deep border of coiled wirework spirals and round beads, built up in two ranks so the frame is nearly as broad as the image it holds.
The Sacred Heart is devotion to the love of Christ under the figure of his own heart, wounded and burning, kept in Catholic homes since the seventeenth century, when he showed it to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and asked that it be loved in return. Filigree framing of this kind belongs to the old folk-jewelry tradition, worked in wire rather than cut from sheet, and each casting is finished by hand so the antiquing sits differently in the coils.
