The Vintage Bronze Sacred Heart and Sorrowful Mother Center is worked on both faces. The front carries the Sacred Heart in relief, a cross rising from its crown and fine rays filling the field around it, so that the shape of the plate and the shape of the image are one and the same. The reverse shows a veiled woman in bust, her head bowed and her hands raised at her breast, in the attitude long used for the Sorrowful Mother.
Pairing the two is old and deliberate. The Heart of Jesus and the heart of his mother, pierced by the sword Simeon foretold, are held together in Catholic devotion as one grief and one love, and a rosary center is exactly where that pairing belongs, since the beads themselves move between her joys and his suffering. There is no lettering on either face; the piece says what it means through form alone.
