The Vintage Bronze Russian Folk Crucifix has softly lobed ends and a figure of great plainness. Christ stands with his arms laid straight along the bar, the body long and narrow, rays breaking behind his head, and the arms and the flared foot are filled with incised ornament. The whole has the direct, unschooled eloquence that Russian devotional bronze is loved for.
Crosses of this kind were cast in village workshops and carried for a lifetime. The reverse bears the old Russian blessing Save and Preserve above the outline of a church, a prayer for protection rather than a statement of doctrine, and the words a Russian Christian expected to have against the skin from baptism onward. It is why so many crosses of this pattern survive worn nearly smooth: they went everywhere with the people who owned them.
