The Rosa Mystica medal opens with a veiled Virgin in profile, her head circled by a plain nimbus and the whole field ringed with roses in full leaf. Across the top, in clear capitals, runs ROSA MYSTICA. The reverse turns to a spired basilica standing on its rocky hill above the long curving arcades that climb toward its doors.
Rosa Mystica means the Mystical Rose, one of the titles given to Mary in the Litany of Loreto, where each invocation names her under a figure drawn from scripture and tradition. The roses crowded around her here are that title made visible.
