The Vintage Bronze Roman Holy Year Jubilee Medal is a pilgrim's keepsake. A papal bust in profile fills the center, ringed by small architectural panels of domes, a colonnade and a great doorway for the basilicas a pilgrim walks to in Rome, with ANNO IVBILEI, in the Year of Jubilee, arched above and ROMA below. The reverse shows a figure standing before a doorway as a file of small figures approaches from the right.
Holy Years have been kept in Rome since 1300, each one opening with the unsealing of the Holy Door at St. Peter's and calling the faithful to confession, pilgrimage and a fresh start. That doorway on the reverse is the point of the whole piece, and the legend around it closes animam meam, my soul. Medals like this came home in the pockets of people who had made the round of the basilicas on foot.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
