The Vintage Bronze Pilgrimage of Rennes Medal is crowned by a cast bow above its oval field. On the front a woman stands in a rocky niche, veiled and mantled, a long rosary over one arm and her hands joined, with roses opening at her feet — the Virgin as she is shown in the grotto images of the Immaculate Conception. The relief is deep, and the rock closes around her like a frame.
The reverse gives a spired and jewelled reliquary shrine standing on a stepped base, with PELERINAGE DE RENNES arched above and below: Pilgrimage of Rennes. Beside the shrine stands the mark of Penin-Poncet of Lyon, one of the great French medal houses of the nineteenth century. Souvenirs of this kind were bought at the pilgrimage itself and carried in a pocket for the rest of a life, which is why so few of them come down unworn.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
