Product Details

The Vintage Bronze Pierced Openwork Crucifix, Two Sided is cut almost entirely away, so that the cross is drawn in slender bars with the light passing straight through it. Christ is modelled on one face against a line of raised beads, and the other face repeats the same tracery with the beaded rib alone. The arms and the foot end in trefoil fleurs-de-lis, and the whole piece is only an inch and three quarters long.

There is no lettering. Crosses pierced in this way belong to a long European tradition of lace-like devotional metalwork in which the ground is cut back until the design stands as a line rather than a surface, and there is something fitting in that: a cross made mostly of the space around it is a fair image of the empty cross Christians actually venerate. Both faces are finished, so the piece is never the wrong way round.

The openwork crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
