The Vintage Bronze Philippine Lilies Openwork Crucifix is opened out almost entirely. Each arm encloses a wide lobed opening, and within each opening a lily unfurls, so that the corpus appears to hang in a frame of flowers. A further spray rises from the foot, and a small titulus sits above the head.
The lily is the flower of purity and of the Resurrection, and setting it around the corpus turns the cross into a garden, Calvary and the empty tomb held in a single image. The original belongs to the tradition of devotional metalwork carried to the Philippines with the Spanish missions and worked there for centuries in local hands. At 2 3/8 inches it is a large piece, kept light and airy by all that piercing.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
