The Vintage Bronze Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii Pendant holds the great Pompeii image on a shield with a fleur-de-lis crest. The Virgin sits enthroned with the Child on her knee, both leaning forward to place rosaries into the hands of two figures kneeling at either side, with AVE MARIA lettered in a cartouche below and the confraternity title, COFRADIA DE N. DEL ROSARIO POMPEYA, arched overhead.
That image belongs to the shrine Bartolo Longo raised at Pompeii in the 1870s, and the whole point of it is a gift being handed down: the rosary given, not merely held. On the reverse a rayed cross rises above two crossed forearms, one bare and one in a friar's sleeve, the old Franciscan emblem of Christ and Saint Francis, under the motto INSTAURARE OMNIA IN CHRISTO PER MARIAM — to restore all things in Christ through Mary. At two and three-eighths inches this is a confraternity badge with real weight and presence.
