The Vintage Bronze Our Lady of the Pillar of Chartres Medal carries a shrine on each face. One holds a standing veiled Madonna in a wide mantle raised on a pillar, lettered N-D-du-PILIER along the foot. The other shows a crowned Madonna seated with the Child on her lap, with NOTRE-DAME DE CHARTRES curving around the rim, and a band of carved clouds runs along the base of both sides.
The French reads simply Our Lady of the Pillar and Our Lady of Chartres. The Pillar Virgin is the dark wooden statue standing in the north aisle of the cathedral, where pilgrims have left candles for centuries; the seated Madonna is the older enthroned image of the same church. One medal holds two of the ways Chartres has prayed to her, and pilgrims still walk the road from Paris to that door every spring.
