The Our Lady of Lujan medal is deep with ornament. At its center, in a sunken field, stands a Virgin in the stiff triangular mantle of a dressed statue, a broad sunburst of rays opening behind her from shoulder to shoulder. Around that center the metal is pierced into a wreath of large daisies and curling leaves, with a fluted, shell-like fan spreading across the lower half.
Our Lady of Lujan is the patroness of Argentina, the small Virgin whose cart, as the story goes, would not move again once it halted on the bank of the Lujan river, and who has been honored on that spot ever since in exactly such a mantle and rays. The antique original was well worn, and the reproduction keeps that softened surface, so the flowers read as gently rubbed rather than crisply new.
