The Vintage Bronze Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Jerome Medal carries the older Spanish Guadalupe, the venerated image of Extremadura rather than the Mexican tilma. The Virgin and Child are crowned and enclosed together in a stiff triangular robe crusted with raised ornament, standing above a crescent, exactly as the image is vested at the sanctuary. The legend reads S. MARIA DE GVADALVPE.
The reverse shows a bearded man in profile with a trumpet sounding at his ear and the legend S. HIERONIMO, Saint Jerome. The trumpet is his own attribute, from the meditation attributed to him that the sound of the last judgment was always in his ears, whatever else he was doing. The pairing is not accidental: the Guadalupe sanctuary was held for centuries by the Hieronymite friars, who kept the shrine, guarded the image and sent it out through Spain and the wider Spanish world.
