The Openwork Lattice Crucifix carries its corpus on a grid of open squares, the arms and upright cut away into a lattice of crossed diagonals so that light passes through the cross itself. Behind the head is a fine rayed halo, and above it a small raised plaque is lettered INRI.
The letters stand for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate set over the cross. The halo is the more remarkable detail. Most crucifixes show the moment of death plainly; this one puts glory behind the bowed head at the same instant, insisting that the man dying there is God, and that the cross is already a throne. The open lattice reinforces it, giving a large crucifix the lightness of something half made of air.
