Vintage Bronze Open Square Crucifix with Rays

The arms of the Vintage Bronze Open Square Crucifix are pierced with long rectangular openings framed by beaded borders, so that the cross is built of squares and bars rather than of curves. Fine rays are cut into the ground behind the crossing and spread out around the corpus, a textured panel stands above the head, and the foot finishes in a small scrolled finial.
The result is a crucifix with an almost architectural feel, geometric where most are foliate, and the contrast is the point of it: against all that ruled and measured metal the body of Christ is modeled softly, the head inclined, the figure long and quiet. Because the arms are open, light passes through the cross as well as behind it, doubling the effect of the rays cut into the ground.
