Both faces of the O Salutaris Hostia Monstrance Medal belong to the Blessed Sacrament. The front carries a monstrance with a rayed luna marked by a cross, standing on a spreading foot, with full-blown roses worked into the arms of the cross-shaped field. The reverse holds a standing haloed figure of Christ, his hands drawn to the breast.
A banner across the base reads O SALUTARIS HOSTIA, O saving Victim, the opening of the hymn sung at Benediction as the monstrance is raised. Beneath the figure on the reverse runs ECCE PANIS ANGELORUM, Behold the Bread of Angels, from the Lauda Sion sequence of Corpus Christi. Together the two inscriptions make this a medal for anyone whose prayer centers on the Eucharist, and the roses soften a design that might otherwise be severe.
