The Vintage Bronze Notre-Dame de la Garde Medal is cut in the shape of an anchor, its stock laid across the top and its flukes curling up at the foot, with a twisted rope border running round the field. On the front the Virgin stands holding the Child on a tall pedestal, lifted high above a harbour where fortified walls and buildings crowd in on either side.
That is the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Garde, which stands on the hill above Marseille beneath its gilded Virgin and has been the sailors' church for centuries, la bonne mere to the whole city and hung inside with the thanks of men who came home. The anchor and the rope say the same thing again. The reverse carries an interlaced N D monogram beneath a small gabled roof. A natural piece for anyone who works on the water, or waits for someone who does.
