The Vintage Bronze Mary with Angels Openwork Medal is as much a small relief sculpture as a medal. Two tall angels stand facing one another, their wings sweeping down the outer edges and their heads bowed inward, and between them an oval opens onto the Virgin shown half-length, rays behind her head and her hands folded across her breast. A winged cherub head is set into the pierced scrollwork at the foot.
The hands drawn over the heart are the gesture Christian art gives Mary at the Annunciation, the moment of her consent, and the angels flanking her here are the court that has attended that moment in devotional imagery for centuries. The drawing of the wings and the whiplash curves of the lower scrollwork place the original at the turn of the twentieth century, when Art Nouveau reached even the smallest devotional castings.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
